The Work of the Holy Spirit
Men’s Retreat

Introduction
The Holy Spirit is a person. He’s not some impersonal force. When you think of the Holy Spirit, don’t be thinking of Obi-Wan saying to Luke, "Use the force, Luke, use the force".
The Holy Spirit is a person, and as a person He has a mind (Rom. 8:27), He loves us (Rom. 15:30), He strives with us (Gen. 6:3), He can be grieved by us (Eph. 4:30), we can insult Him (Heb. 10:29), He can be lied to (Acts 5:3). And He’s not just any old ordinary person, He’s God. Sometimes we have a problem identifying just who a person actually is.

TRUE STORY IN ATLANTIC CITY N.J.(WAS IN THE PAPER)
On a recent weekend in Atlantic City, a woman won a bucketful of quarters at a slot machine. She took a break from the slots for dinner with her husband in the hotel dining room. But first she wanted to stash the quarters in her room. "I’ll be right back and we’ll go to eat," she told her husband and she carried the coin-laden bucket to the elevator. As she was about to walk into the elevator she noticed two men already aboard. Both were black. One of them was big...very big... an intimidating figure. The woman froze. Her first thought was: These two are going to rob me. Her next thought was: Don’t be a bigot, they look like perfectly nice gentlemen. But racial stereotypes are powerful, and fear immobilized her. She stood and stared at the two men. She felt anxious, flustered, ashamed. She hoped they didn’t read her mind, but knew they surely did; her hesitation about joining them on the elevator was all too obvious. Her face was flushed. She couldn’t just stand there, so with a mighty effort of will she picked up one foot and stepped forward and followed with the other foot and was on the elevator. Avoiding eye contact, she turned around stiffly and faced the elevator doors as they closed. A second passed, and then another second, and then another. Her fear increased! The elevator didn’t move. Panic consumed her. My God, she thought, I’m trapped and about to be robbed! Her heart plummeted. Perspiration poured from every pore. Then....one of the men said, "Hit the floor." Instinct told her: Do what they tell you. The bucket of quarters flew upwards as she threw out her arms and collapsed on the elevator carpet. A shower of coins rained down on her. Take my money and spare me, she prayed. More seconds passed. She heard one of the men say politely, "Ma’am, if you’ll just tell us what floor you’re going to, we’ll push the button." The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out. He was trying mightily to hold in a belly laugh. She lifted her head and looked up at the two men. They reached down to help her up. Confused, she struggled to her feet "When I told my man here to hit the floor," said the average sized one, "I meant that he should hit the elevator button for our floor. I didn’t mean for you to hit the floor, ma’am." He spoke genially. He bit his lip. It was obvious he was having a hard time not laughing. She thought: My God, what a spectacle I’ve made of myself. She was too humiliated to speak. She wanted to blurt out an apology, but words failed her. How do you apologize to two perfectly respectable gentlemen for behaving as though they were going to rob you? She didn’t know what to say. The 3 of them gathered up the strewn quarters and refilled her bucket. When the elevator arrived at her floor they insisted on walking her to her room. She seemed a little unsteady on her feet, and they were afraid she might not make it down the corridor. At her door they bid her a good evening. As she slipped into her room she could hear them roaring with laughter while they walked back to the elevator. The woman brushed herself off. She pulled herself together and went downstairs for dinner with her husband.
The next morning flowers were delivered to her room - a dozen roses. Attached to EACH rose was a crisp one hundred dollar bill. The card said: "Thanks for the best laugh we’ve had in years." It was signed, Eddie Murphy and Michael Jordan.
Do you know who the Holy Spirit is? If He was in an elevator with you, would you recognize Him? The Bible says that as Christians, the Holy Spirit dwells inside of us. Do we recognize who it is that lives in us? If we really had a clue who the Holy Spirit is, would it change how we relate to Him?
He is the Comforter
There are four times in Scripture that the Holy Spirit is called the "Comforter" (King James, John 14:16; 14:26; 15:26; 16:7).
The Greek word that is used in all these instances is parakletos.
comforter – parakletos – summoned, called to one's side, esp. called to one's aid; one who pleads another's cause before a judge, counsel for defense (Jesus is called parakletos in 1John 2:1; He is our "defense attorney"); in the widest sense, a helper, aider, assistant. Other Bible versions translate this word as "counselor" (NIV, NLT) or "helper" (NAS, NKJV). The word comes from parakaleo – to call to one's side; to admonish, exhort; to console, to encourage and strengthen by consolation, to comfort; to instruct, teach.
Let’s look a little at the first instance of this title for the Holy Spirit:
(John 14:16-17 KJV) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; {17} Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
another
– allos – another of the same kindComforter – parakletos – called to one’s side to help
Jesus is telling the disciples that He has been their Comforter, and now He is going to send them "another" Comforter.
We use the English word "comforter" to describe a quilt on your bed that you can snuggle up in when you’re cold. That’s not all that bad. Jesus has been that source of warmth and comfort to the disciples. But it goes so much deeper than just warm fuzzies.
He has been the one there to pray for them. He has been the one that was there to help them. He’s the one who’s been there to answer all their questions.
He’s the one who’s been there to show them how to handle one situation after another.
(Mat 17:14-21 KJV) And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, {15} Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is a lunatic, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. {16} And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. {17} Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. {18} And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. {19} Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? {20} And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. {21} Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
Though I must admit that I might have been a little embarrassed to have had Jesus come back and find that I was not able to do something. On the other hand, it would have been awesome to have had Jesus around to fix my mistakes and teach me how to do things right. We come across times where we don’t know what to do, or we seem powerless to do anything, but the Holy Spirit is alongside us to help us.
Wouldn’t it have been incredible to have lived with Jesus for three years? Ask Him any question? We have the Holy Spirit, the "other" comforter alongside us.
Lesson
He’s there to help you.
This is part of what the Holy Spirit wants you to understand about the relationship you have with Him. He’s there to help you. There are going to be times when it’s important that we allow other people to help us, but God’s desire is that we learn to let Him help us more and more.

When descending the Grand Canyon, often times a person has to travel on narrow ledges that have only enough room for a mule to get a foothold. The ribbons of rock that run along the edges of these towering cliffs overlook vertical precipices that descend hundreds of feet to the valley below. When one must make use of these stony paths, the safest course is to let the mule find his own way. You don’t want to try to control the mule. It knows the way. You have to let it do its thing.
Our life works best when we let the Holy Spirit be in control.
He produces "fruit"
Jesus said,
(Luke 6:43-44 NLT) "A good tree can't produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can't produce good fruit. {44} A tree is identified by the kind of fruit it produces. Figs never grow on thornbushes or grapes on bramble bushes.
You can tell what kinds of things are inside a person by what kinds of things their life produces.
If the Holy Spirit is really at work in your life, then you will see things naturally appear. These aren’t things that you have to work at to manufacture, they are things that happen because the Spirit is working in your life.
(Gal 5:19-23 NLT) When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, your lives will produce these evil results: sexual immorality, impure thoughts, eagerness for lustful pleasure, {20} idolatry, participation in demonic activities, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, divisions, the feeling that everyone is wrong except those in your own little group, {21} envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other kinds of sin. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. {22} But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, {23} gentleness, and self-control. Here there is no conflict with the law.
Take a pencil and underline the things in each list that would characterize you. Which list is a better picture of your life? Most likely it’s a combination of both of the lists.
Note: These lists don’t tell you how you are to act, they are simply a measure of how much you’re letting the Holy Spirit work in your life. You can’t manufacture love, joy, or peace. But you can let the Holy Spirit have more and more of your life.

Once there was this very wealthy young man. He lived in a great, elaborate house with dozens of rooms. Each room was more comfortable and more beautiful than the one before it. There were paintings and sculptures. Crystal chandeliers, golden, ornate railings on the stairs. More beauty than most have ever seen. One day he decided to invite the Lord to come home and stay with him. When the Lord arrived, this young man offered him the very best room in the house. The room was upstairs and at the end of the hall. "This room is yours, Jesus! Stay as long as you like and you can do whatever you want to in this room, remember Jesus, its all yours." "Thank you" the Lord replied, and with that the man shut the door and went about his daily business. That evening after he had retired for the night there came a loud knocking at the front door. The young man pulled on his robe and made his way downstairs. When he opened the door he found that the devil had sent three of his demons to attack the man. He quickly tried to close the door but one of the demons kept sticking his foot in. Sometime later, after a great struggle, he managed to slam the door shut and returned to his room totally exhausted. Can you believe that! The man thought. Jesus is upstairs in my very best room sleeping while I am down here battling demons. Oh, well, maybe he just didn’t hear. He slept fitfully that night. The next day things went along as normal and, being tired as he was, the young man retired early that evening. Along about midnight, there came such a terrible ruckus at the front door that the young man was sure that whatever it was would tear the door down. He stumbled down the stairs once again and opened the door to find that there were dozens of demons now trying to get into his beautiful home. For more than three hours he fought and struggled against the demons from hell and finally overtook them enough to shut the door against their attack. All energy seemed to fail him. He really don’t understand this at all. Why won’t the Lord come to my rescue? Why does he allow me to fight all by myself? I feel so alone. Troubled, he found his way to the sofa and fell into a restless sleep. The next morning he decided to inquire of the Lord about the happenings of the last two evenings. Quietly he made his way to the elegant bedroom where he had left Jesus. "Jesus," he called as he tapped at the door. "Lord, I don’t understand what is happening. For the last two nights I have had to fight the demons away from my door while you laid up here sleeping. Don’t you care about me? Did I not give you the very best room in the house? He could see the tears building in Jesus’ eyes but continued on, "I just don’t understand. I really thought that once I invited you in to live with me that you would take care of me and I gave you the best room in my house and everything. What more can I do?" "My precious child," Jesus spoke so softly. "I do love and care for you. I protect all that you have released into my care. But when you invited me to come here and stay, you brought me to this lovely room and you shut the door to the rest of your house. I am Lord of this room but I am not Master of this house. I have protected this room and no demon may enter here." "Oh, Lord, please forgive me. Take all of my house - it is yours. I am so sorry that I never offered you all to begin with. I want you to have control of everything." With this he flung open the bedroom door and knelt at Jesus’ feet. "Please forgive me Lord for being so selfish." Jesus smiled and told him that He had already forgiven him and that He would take care of things from now on. That night as the young man prepared for bed he thought to himself, "I wonder if those demons will return. I am so tired of fighting them each and every night." But he knew that Jesus said that he would take care of things from now on. Along about midnight the banging on the door was frightening. The young man slipped out of his room in time to see Jesus going down the stairs. He watched in awe as Jesus swung open the door, no need to be afraid. Satan stood at the door this time demanding to be let in. "What do you want, Satan?" the Lord asked. The devil bowed low in the presence of the Lord, "So sorry, I seem to have gotten the wrong address." And with that, he and the demons all ran away.
There is a moral to this tale. Jesus wants all of you, not just a part. He will take all that you give Him but nothing more. How much of your heart have you given to the Lord? Are you keeping a portion of it away from Him? Perhaps the attacks are coming more and more each day. Why not let the Lord fight the battles for you? He is always victorious. I have found that God made man simple, all of man's complexities are of his own devising.

He guides us
John 16:13
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.guide
– hodegeo – to be a guide, lead on one's way, to guideThe Holy Spirit guides us into truth in the sense of helping us discern right from wrong, truth from error.
show you - anaggello - to announce, make known; literally, "to be a messenger from God right in your midst". NAS – "He will disclose to you what is to come"
Though I think this can be talking about God giving the New Testament writers insight into the events of the future, I think it also speaks of the Holy Spirit desiring to give us guidance in our lives.
Examples of the Holy Spirit’s leading:
(Acts 8:26-35 KJV) And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. {27} And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, {28} Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. {29} Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. {30} And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? {31} And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him. {32} The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth: {33} In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth. {34} And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man? {35} Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
Philip had been in the middle of a revival in Samaria. But an "angel" of the Lord told him to go to Gaza. "Angel" (aggelos) simply means "messenger". It may have been an actual angel, or a prophet, or simply the Holy Spirit Himself.
All the angel said was to get to a certain road. Once he got to the road, then the Spirit told him just to go up to the oncoming chariot.
Lesson
A step at a time
We would like to get a five volume, detailed plan of what is going to happen each step of the way, but sometimes all the Holy Spirit does is take you a step at a time.
What’s important to realize is that you will often not get the next step until you’ve obeyed what you’ve been told.

The Norwegian sailors used to have a unique way of navigating the fjords at night. They had a series of lighthouses that would be stationed at various points along the dangerous waterways. What a captain needed to do was to aim his vessel at the lighthouse ahead of him. As long as he stayed on course, heading for the lighthouse, he was safe. But after awhile, he would come around a cliff and the next lighthouse would come into view. The captain would then change course to head for the next lighthouse.
We too are sometimes going to be led by the Spirit only one step at a time. We need to just keep faithful to what little promptings that He gives us. Go from lighthouse to lighthouse.
Peter had been visiting with a friend and was spending the morning up on the guy’s roof, praying, when the Lord gave him this vision of a sheet carrying a bunch of unclean animals being lowered from heaven. Over and over Peter was asked to kill and eat these animals –
(Acts 10:17-20 KJV) Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate, {18} And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there. {19} While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee. {20} Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.
The Spirit simply "told" Peter what was to happen. Peter wasn’t in a church prayer meeting. There wasn’t somebody with a gift of prophecy telling him what the Lord wanted. He was praying alone on the housetop of Simon the Tanner. It seems that the Spirit just somehow spoke to his heart.
Lesson
Hearing His voice
We need to learn to hear the voice of the Lord. But there’s a problem, and that’s that God doesn’t seem to always speak too loudly. We are told that God’s voice can sometimes be a "still small voice" (1Ki. 19:12).
Could it be that sometimes the Holy Spirit is speaking, but we just can’t hear Him?
Illustration
From time to time in our worship band we have problems hearing what we need to hear in the monitors. There used to be a day when we thought the solution was to just turn things up. If we can’t hear Dave’s guitar, then turn up his guitar. If we can’t hear the girls, turn up their microphones. Sometimes that works, but sometimes the reason you can’t hear is because everything is just too loud. Sometimes the answer is to turn down all the noise. Then you can hear things better.
Is it possible that you have a lot of noise in your life, making it hard to hear God’s still small voice?
I think it’s interesting that Peter was in a time of prayer when the Spirit spoke to him.
(Acts 16:6-7 KJV) Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, {7} After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.
Here the Spirit guided them by keeping them from doing certain things.
forbidden – koluo – to hinder; to withhold a thing from anyone; to refuse one a thing
How did the Holy Spirit "forbid" them?
Luke doesn’t tell us how. It might have been through circumstances. Perhaps all the wagons leaving for Asia were full. It might have been through a prophetic word. It might have simply been that quiet impression on their heart.
assayed – peirazo – to try whether a thing can be done; make trial of, test
suffered – eao – to allow, permit, let; to allow one to do as he wishes
Here’s another insight into the working of the Spirit. Paul apparently is doing something to "test" to see if it’s okay to go to Bithynia. He’s not sure. He apparently gives it a try. But again the Spirit says "no". We might call it a "check" in our spirit. We feel a hindrance to do something.

A few years ago I helped take one of our kids’ classes on a field trip a few weeks ago. We were taking the kids all the way through L.A., and so I suggested that those drivers that had cell phones swap phone numbers so we could stay in touch in case we got separated. We got everyone’s phone numbers, then took off. I was the last car, and got separated immediately from everyone, even before we got on the freeway. I thought, "Aha, I’ll just phone them and tell them to drive slowly until I catch up!" But they all had their phones turned off!
Are you even open to the Holy Spirit speaking to you? Is the phone on?
Then learn to listen for Him.
