Isaiah 11
Sunday Morning Bible Study
March 28, 1999
Introduction
We ended last week by looking at a prophecy that had a double edge to it. It would have a fulfillment in the coming invasion by Assyria, as well as possibly another second fulfillment with the coming of the Antichrist. The section ended by describing the march of an army on Jerusalem, but only to have the army cut down by the Lord.
(Isa 10:33-34 KJV) Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror: and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled. {34} And he shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.
This was fulfilled when the Assyrians came against Jerusalem during the reign of King Hezekiah. 185,000 Assyrians were killed in a single night by the Angel of the Lord. There seems to be the possible fulfillment when the Lord comes back and wipes out the armies of the Antichrist, which will apparently be gathered around the city of Jerusalem.
But the picture we were left with was that of a wood cutter chopping down a mighty forest. We stay with that picture of trees that have been chopped down as we continue on. The now we look to another tree, one that had been chopped down already.
:1-5 The Coming Prince
:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse
Jesse was the father of King David. This is talking about Jesus (Rev. 22:16).
The "tree" of Jesse would be a reference to the kings of Judah, all of whom were descended from David (and Jesse). The interesting thing is that in Isaiah’s day, the "tree" of Jesse had not been cut down yet. They were "cut down" at the time of Nebuchadnezzar, when the nation of Judah was taken captive to Babylon. In Jesus’ day, there were still descendants of David (like Jesus), but there were no kings.
:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
This is talking about the relationship of the Holy Spirit to Jesus. (Mat. 3:16-17)
If you notice, there are actually seven aspects of the Holy Spirit listed here. The number seven is seen as the number of "perfection", the idea being that the Holy Spirit is on Jesus in the fullest sense. It’s possible that this might be what John sees as the "seven spirits" before God’s throne. (Rev. 4:5)
Lesson
Being shaped into His image.
Part of God’s goal in our lives is to mold us more and more into the image of Jesus. This is part of the work that the Holy Spirit does in our lives.
(Rom 8:29 KJV) For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
That means that when we see lists like this of what Jesus is like, we ought to consider how God might be wanting to mold us.
1. The Spirit of the LORD – If you really have the Holy Spirit working in your life, then you’ll be finding that you’ll be talking a lot about the Lord. You’ll be talking a lot about Jesus.
(John 15:26 KJV) But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
If you have a difficult time talking about the Lord openly, could it be that you’re not allowing the Holy Spirit to "rest" upon you?
2. wisdom – Wisdom is applied knowledge. It’s not just knowing things, but knowing what’s right, putting all the pieces together.
3. understanding – biynah – understanding, discernment, discrimination. Jesus was able to see right through people. He could see their motives. (Mat. 22:18). Here’s the mature Christian:
(Heb 5:14 NLT) Solid food is for those who are mature, who have trained themselves to recognize the difference between right and wrong and then do what is right.
4. counsel
– `etsah – counsel, advice, purpose. The ability to make plans and decisions. We are often looking for someone to give us advice or counsel. We have a great need for it. Sometimes I think the Lord would really appreciate it if we considered going to Him. The more we grow in the Lord, the more we will find ourselves receiving counsel from Him.(Psa 34:4 KJV) I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
5. might
– g@buwrah – strength, might. The Spirit doesn’t just give us the ability to make decisions, but the strength to carry them out.(Acts 1:8 KJV) But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
The power (Greek, dunamis) the Holy Spirit gives us is the "ability", the "enabling", the "dynamic" to do what God desires of us.
6. knowledge – da`ath – knowledge, perception, skill, discernment, understanding, wisdom. Perhaps this is the knowledge of the deep things of God.
(1 Cor 2:9-11 KJV) But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. {10} But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. {11} For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
It’s only with the Holy Spirit in our life that we are able to have any kind of understanding at all into the ways of God.
7. the fear of the LORD – having a healthy awe, fear, and respect for God is where understanding and wisdom start.
Psalms 111:10 The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do [his commandments]: his praise endureth for ever.
The other day I heard someone ask Dr. Dobson why he never rebelled as a teenager. He thought about it and replied something like this, "I hate to admit it, but one of the biggest reasons why I didn’t rebel was because I knew that God was watching." Though we would love to be able to say that we never stray into temptation because we’re just so in love with Jesus, or because the Holy Spirit completely frees us, yet there’s nothing wrong with understanding that God DOES see.
As the Holy Spirit is more and more heavily upon our lives, we grow to be more and more aware of God’s presence. God not only sees me, but He’s right here, now.
:3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD:
quick understanding – ruwach – (Hiphil) to smell, scent, perceive odor, accept; of delight (metaph). The idea is that of delighting in the smell of something. Think of that smell when fresh bread is baking in the oven. Or on Thanksgiving as the smell of the roasting turkey begins to fill the house. There’s great delight in those odors. But here, the thing that Jesus would delight in is the fear of the Lord.
Lesson
Don’t be afraid of the fear of the Lord.
I know that sounds a little mixed up. But sometimes we get the idea that the fear of the Lord is a yucky, unpleasant kind of thing. But there can be a great sense of relief and peace when you know that you’re operating exactly within the boundaries that God desires for you. We need to delight in that peace.
:3 and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes
Unlike Jesus, here’s one of the areas that I fail the most in. Too often I make these quick judgments or decisions based on one little thing I’ve seen or heard. Yet many times I haven’t heard the full story.
Lesson
Appearances can be deceiving.
Sometimes things aren’t quite what we think they are.

Boat Race and Management
The Americans and the Japanese decided to engage in a competitive boat race. Both teams practiced hard and long to reach their peak performance. On the big day the Americans felt ready, but the Japanese won by a mile. Afterward, the American team was discouraged by the loss. Morale sagged. Corporate management decided that the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found, so a consulting firm was hired to investigate the problem and recommended corrective action. The consultant's finding: The Japanese team had eight people rowing and one person steering; the American team had one person rowing and eight people steering. After a year of study and millions spent analyzing the problem, the consultant firm concluded that too many people were steering and not enough were rowing on the American team. So as the next race day neared the following year, the American team's management structure was completely reorganized. The new structure: four steering managers, three area steering managers and a new performance review system for the person rowing the boat to provide work incentive. The next year, the Japanese won by two miles. Humiliated, the American corporation laid off the rower for poor performance and gave the managers a bonus for discovering the problem.
There may be some situations in our lives where we’ve made some pretty rash judgments. We could be wrong. We may not know the whole picture.
(Prov 18:13 KJV) He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.
:4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor … the meek
The poor and meek will find that Jesus is on their side.
:4 and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth
He will one day punish sin. (Rev. 19:15)
:5 And righteousness shall be the girdle … and faithfulness …
These will be important aspects of Jesus’ reign. He is righteous in that everything He does will be absolutely right and correct. He is faithful in that He will never falter. We’ll always be able to depend on Him.
:6-9 The Natural aspects of the coming Kingdom
:6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb …
Currently, all of creation is suffering from the curse that came as a result of Adam’s sin. But Jesus comes back, one of the things that happens is that there will be a lifting of the curse. All of creation is very anxious for this to occur. (Rom. 8:19-23)
:7 the lion shall eat straw like the ox
No more carnivorous animals. They’ll all be vegetarians.
:8 And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp …
suckling child – a child that is still young enough to be nursing. Probably 3 years old or younger.
asp – cobra / cockatrice – viper
I think my sons will think this is absolutely cool. I am not convinced that my wife will agree with them.
:9 for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD
Jeremiah tells us of this too:
(Jer 31:33-34 KJV) But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. {34} And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
There isn’t going to be a need for evangelism. Everyone who makes it into the kingdom will know the Lord.
Lesson
Will you be there?
It’s only those who know the Lord now that will be in this kingdom.
Is God just some sort of cosmic "force" to you, or have you found that He’s a real person, very much alive today?
Coming to know God personally starts with the very thing that Jeremiah hints at, the forgiveness of your sins. It’s our sins that keep us from knowing God personally in the first place. Until our sins are forgiven and taken out of the way, it is impossible for any human to know God personally, in truth.
God can offer you forgiveness for your sins because He has graciously paid the debt your sins have rung up. He paid for your sins when Jesus died on the cross, paying the penalty of death instead of us. Now all that remains is that you be willing to allow Him to pay the price for YOUR sins.
:10-16 The political aspects of the coming Kingdom
:10 which shall stand for an ensign of the people
ensign – nec – something lifted up, standard, signal, banner, sign. Jesus, the "root of Jesse", will be a rallying point for the whole world.
:10 his rest shall be glorious.
His resting place is where He lives, in Jerusalem, at the temple (Psa. 132:13-14).
:11 the second time to recover the remnant of his people
second time – The first time that the Lord gathered Israel from having been scattered in these places was in 537 BC, under the leadership of Zerubbabel after the Babylonian captivity. This second time would have to be what has begun happening to Israel in this last century as the Jews have been migrating to their homeland, and especially since 1948, when Israel was declared again to be a nation.
:11 from Assyria …
See the
map. These were some of the places that the Northern Kingdom had been scattered to when they were conquered by Assyria in 722 BC, from where they returned the first time.:12 the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth
corners – literally, "wings". Today, Jews are coming to Israel from all over the world.
:13 Ephraim shall not envy Judah …
There will no longer be a division in the nation of the north versus the south.
:14 the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west
shoulders of the Philistines – The picture is of a bird of prey (like a falcon) attacking it’s victim from behind. The "shoulders" refers to the low range of foothills that lie between the land of the Philistines and the taller hills in Judah. (see
map):14 upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon
Edom … Moab … Ammon – All in modern Jordan. (see
map):15 the LORD shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea
tongue of the Egyptian sea – the northwest finger of the Red Sea that leads to the Suez Canal. The area is known now as the Gulf of Suez. (see
map):15 shall he shake his hand over the river
the river – the Euphrates. It will be dried up into small streams, making a way across easy.
:16 an highway for the remnant …from Assyria …
As the Euphrates river becomes fordable, people from Assyria will make their way to Israel, just like when Israel crossed the Red Sea.
Lesson
Bring the lost sheep home.
As you read verses 10-16, you get the idea that the Lord is bringing His people home. He’ll take care of all the problems, all the things that are standing in the way, and His people will come home.
It’s not too unlike how a Shepherd brings his flock home. He wants us to be a part of what He’s doing now to bring the lost sheep home.
This is an excerpt from Phillip Keller’s A Shepherd Looks at the Good Shepherd and His Sheep (pg.349-450):
How does an eastern sheep man gather up his stray sheep? How does He bring home the wanderers and stragglers?
He does not use dogs the way western sheep men do. He does not resort to horses or donkeys to herd them home or round them up. Nor does he employ helicopters or Hondas as some western ranchers do.
No, the eastern shepherd uses his own pet lambs and bellwethers (sheep that take the initiative, sheep that are leaders) to gather in lost sheep. Because these pets are so fond of being near him and with him, he has to literally go out into the hills and rough country himself taking them along, scattering them abroad. There they graze and feed alongside the wild and wayward sheep.
As evening approaches the shepherd gently winds his way home. His favorite pet lambs and bellwethers quietly follow him. As they move along in his footsteps, they bring with them the lost and scattered sheep. It is a winsome picture full of pathos.
In Matthew 10 Christ actually took his twelve men and scattered them out among the lost sheep of Israel (vs. 6). He warned them that He was sending them out as sheep in the midst of predators who might try to prevent them from bringing home the lost (vs. 16). But they were to go anyway, because the presence of His Spirit would be with them to preserve them in every danger.
This is a precise picture drawn for us in bold colors of what our Good Shepherd requires of us. He does not demand that we embark on some grandiose schemes of our own design to do His work in the world. He does not suggest that we become embroiled in some complex organization of human ingenuity to achieve His goal of gathering in lost souls.
He simply asks me to be one who will be so attached to Him, so fond of Him, so true to Him, that in truth I shall be like His pet lamb or bellwether. No matter where He takes me; no matter where He places me; no matter whom I am alongside of in my daily living, that person will be induced to eventually follow the Shepherd because I follow Him.
