Psalms 103-104

Thursday Evening Bible Study

January 5, 2017

Introduction

Do people see Jesus? Is the gospel preached? Does it address the person who is: Empty, lonely, guilty, or afraid to die?  Does it speak to the broken hearted? Does it build up the church? Milk – Meat – Manna Preach for a decision Is the church loved? Target 3300 words   Video = 75 wpm

The English word psalm comes from a Greek word that means “a poem sung to musical accompaniment”, or in particular, “stringed instruments”.

The Hebrew name is tehillim, which means “praises.”

The book of Psalms is the hymnbook of God’s people.

It’s also the “Him” book as well. It’s all about Jesus.

The writer of Hebrews quotes from Psalm 40:8 when he writes,

(Hebrews 10:7 NKJV) Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come— In the volume of the book it is written of Me— To do Your will, O God.’ ”
The author was talking about Jesus.
We’re going to see a lot of Jesus in the Psalms.

Soul Music

Music touches the soul. It’s “soulish” in nature. It touches the emotions.

We’re going to find every kind of emotion possible expressed in the Psalms.

For every sigh there is a Psalm.

For most of us, this is what makes the Psalms so wonderful. We can identify. We can relate.
If we were honest, even darkest most depressing Psalms describe the very things we go through day by day.

It is my prayer that as we continue on this journey through the Psalms, we won’t just look at these songs academically, with our mind, but that we may also grow as worshippers.

Psalm 103 - Reasons to Praise

: A Psalm Of David.

:1 Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!

:1 Bless the Lord, O my soul

Blessbarak – to bless, kneel, praise.

It is in the form of a command.

Lesson

Choosing to praise

David is commanding his soul to praise God. He’s commanding his entire being, his soul, to get into the act. He’s talking to himself.
We can fall into a trap of thinking that certain things can only be done when we “feel” like it.
It’s a huge mistake to think that “love” is simply an emotion you feel.

Real love is a choice you make.  It’s a choice to value another person and to express that choice with appropriate actions – whether words or actions.

Praising God is the same thing.

Expressing worship to God shouldn’t come from a sense of “feeling it”, but from a sense of choosing to do it.

Illustration
There was a story about a little boy who went to Sunday School.  When it came time for the whole class to stand up and sing, Johnny stayed in his seat.  The teacher asked Johnny to stand with everyone else.  He didn’t.  The teacher asked again.  Finally, Johnny stood up, but said, “I may be standing on the outside, but I’m still sitting on the inside!”

When it comes to singing or giving praise to God, frankly sometimes we feel like Johnny.  We may reluctantly stand up with everyone else, but inside we’re still sitting down.

God says through Isaiah,
(Isaiah 29:13 NLT) And so the Lord says, “These people say they are mine. They honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. And their worship of me is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote.
Psalm 103 shows us how to get our “inside” praising God to match what we are doing on the outside.
The healthy Christian will learn to give praise to God, even when their circumstances are difficult.
Job is a great example of someone who had learned to praise God in the most difficult of circumstances.

After learning that his flocks had been destroyed, his servants had been killed, and all of his children had died …

(Job 1:20–21 NKJV) —20 Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

:2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits:

forgetshakach – to forget, ignore, wither

benefitsgemuwl – dealing, recompense, benefit

:2 forget not all His benefits

Lesson

Choose to remember

Some things we want to forget.
Illustration

THE SENILITY PRAYER

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,

the good fortune to run into the ones I do,

and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Some things we will never forget.
For Texans, it’s the Alamo. For the Great Generation, it was Pearl Harbor.  For our generation it’s 9-11.
We need to remember what God has done in our lives.
David will remind us of some of the things we need to remember…

:3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases,

:3 Who forgives all your iniquities

Lesson

Forgiveness

Have you ever done something so horrible that you began to think that you could never be forgiven?
Have you ever done something so bad that you began to think that the shame you were feeling was going to kill you?
God forgives sin.
He can do this because He has paid the penalty for our sin.
(Isaiah 53:6 NKJV) All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

We might think that the worst part of Jesus’ crucifixion was the nails through His hands and feet.

The most difficult part of the cross was having the weight of the world’s sins heaped upon Him.

Sometimes Satan deceives us into thinking that our particular sin was so horrible that we could never be forgiven.
Or perhaps we will think that because we’ve done this certain sin so many times, that God must be tired of forgiving us.
What we fail to recognize is the enormity of the price Jesus paid for us.

If we look at our sin in terms of money, we might think that God could never forgive us because we’ve racked up a debt of $532,363.

Yet Jesus paid trillions and trillions of dollars to cover the price of our sin.

Further down in our psalm, David will write,
(Psalm 103:12 NKJV) As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

If David had said, “as far as the north is from the south …” then we’d be able to calculate just how far God is willing to remove our sins from us. You can measure the distance between the north and the south poles, a distance of 12,430 miles. But if you are trying to measure the distance from east to west, you’re going to need a longer tape measure. There is no end to going “east” and no end to going “west”. God has infinitely removed our sins from us.

:3 Who heals all your diseases

Lesson

Healing

He has provided for our healing through His suffering.
(Isaiah 53:5 NKJV) But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.

Though this includes physical, mental, and emotional healing, the ultimate healing is spiritual.

“But” you say, “I’ve asked Jesus to heal me, and I’m still not healed.”
Some say it’s your fault because you lack faith.  I don’t think that’s always the case.
The story isn’t over yet.  He hasn’t healed you yet.  For some of you, He may want to heal you today.  For some, the healing may come tomorrow.  For all believers, complete healing will come when we die.

Not everyone will receive this ultimate healing.

Those who choose to reject Jesus will not be healed:

(Isaiah 66:24 NKJV) “And they shall go forth and look Upon the corpses of the men Who have transgressed against Me. For their worm does not die, And their fire is not quenched. They shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.

For those of us who trust in Jesus, we will be completely healed at death…
(Revelation 21:4 NKJV) And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

This isn’t just some sort of cop-out for those who aren’t healed in this life. It’s the truth.

Towards the end of their lives, both my dad and my mom were experiencing a lot of pain.

My mom and dad are no longer suffering.

:4 Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,

:4 Who redeems your life from destruction

redeemsga’al –act as kinsman-redeemer, ransom, do the part of a kinsman

destructionshachath – pit, destruction, grave; pit (of Hell)

Lesson

Salvation

The Bible says that the penalty of our sin is death, eternal separation from God.  When Jesus died on the cross, He paid the penalty or ransom for us so we wouldn’t have to go to hell.
Jesus told a story about a rich man and a beggar named Lazarus.  Both men died.
(Luke 16:22–26 NKJV) —22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’
Hell is not a place you want to spend eternity.

When we believe in Jesus and accept His free gift of forgiveness, based upon the fact that He died for us, we are no longer condemned to hell, but now welcomed into heaven.

Is that a good reason to bless God?

:5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

:5 your youth is renewed like the eagle’s

renewedchadash – to be new, renew, repair

Lesson

Renewal

Sometimes when you are going through a difficult time, you can feel as if nothing will ever change.
The truth is, God will give us times of “renewal”.
The renewing comes from our relationship with God.  It comes when we learn to slow down, come to Him, and find rest in Him.
Isaiah used language similar to David’s…
(Isaiah 40:29–31 NKJV) —29 He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, 31 But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

When you are overwhelmed, learn to wait on Him.

:6 The Lord executes righteousness And justice for all who are oppressed.

Here’s another reason we can praise Him – because in the end, God will bring justice.  He will fix everything that is wrong.

:7 He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel.

:8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.

:9 He will not always strive with us, Nor will He keep His anger forever.

:7 He made known His ways to Moses

Moses was given the blessing of getting a good glimpse of what God was like.

It happened when the Israelites had once again rebelled against God in the wilderness.

Moses seemed to be taking too long on Mount Sinai getting God’s commandments, so the people decided to build a golden calf to worship instead.
When Moses returned, he pleaded with God not to wipe out the people, and God showed mercy to the people.
Then Moses asked if he could get a glimpse of God’s glory.
God hid Moses in the cleft of a rock, and described Himself as He passed by Moses.
(Exodus 34:6–7 NKJV) —6 And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, 7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”
Though God will judge men’s sins, God is first and foremost merciful, gracious, and patient.
This is how God revealed His ways to Moses.

:10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities.

:11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him;

:12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

:10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins

Lesson

Merciful

“Justice” is getting what you deserve.  “Mercy” is not getting what you deserve.  “Grace” is getting what you don’t deserve.
If you happen to be driving 40 miles an hour in a 25 mph zone, you run the risk of being pulled over by one of Fullerton’s finest.
“Justice” is when the officer writes you a ticket.
“Mercy” is when he pulls you over, warns you, and doesn’t write a ticket.
“Grace” is when the officer takes you out to breakfast and pays for your meal.
God is just, but He’s also gracious and merciful.  Here the emphasis is on mercy.

Pressing Your Luck
Patrick O’Reilly was lucky. Since the day he had found that four leaf clover, everything good seemed to come his way. He had met the wonderful Rosie, and after a whirlwind romance, they were married. And now, a year later, he was the proud father of beautiful twins, a boy and a girl. At work, the story was the same. He had been promoted and had received a substantial raise, and now the firm had come up with a profit sharing plan. Patty was certain his good fortune was due to his 4-leaf clover. Everywhere he went, he was certain to be carrying the talisman in his suit pocket. One morning, Patty could not find the clover. He searched the house, but it was not there. In panic, he tried to recall when he had last seen it. He finally recalled it was in his gray suit that he had dropped off at the dry cleaners. He rushed to the cleaners only to find that the work had been completed and his suit was ready to be picked up. He searched the suit and found the 4-leaf clover, still in one piece but now flattened from the dry cleaning. From that day on, Patty’s fortunes changed. Life was good but was no longer perfect. The little inconveniences were always there. He had a flat tire as he was driving to an important meeting. The twins developed measles when his boss and his wife were over for dinner. No, Patty’s life had changed. He still carried the amulet, but he was certainly not living under the silver lining he was used to and had come to expect. Finally, he had had enough. He visited the parish priest to see if he could help him understand what had happened. “This certainly was to be expected,” he was told. “You should have known ... One should never press one’s luck.”
Yet in reality this is not how God works.
We tend to think that every bad circumstance must have been caused by some sin in our life.

While this is true some times, it’s not true all the time.

If God was up in heaven dealing out penalties for every sin you ever committed, you would have died a long time ago.
When Israel was in the wilderness, rebelled against God, and made a golden calf, that should have been it.  God should have wiped them out.  Instead He was merciful.
He doesn’t deal with us according to our sins.

:13 As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him.

pitiesracham – to love, love deeply, have mercy, be compassionate, have tender affection, have compassion

:14 For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.

:14 He remembers that we are dust

dust‘aphar – dry earth, dust, powder, ashes, earth, ground, mortar, rubbish

The Bible says that God formed man from “dust” (Gen. 2:7)

(Genesis 2:7 NKJV) And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

The Bible also says when we die, we will return to the “dust” (Gen. 3:19)

(Genesis 3:19 NKJV) In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.”
Illustration
FROM DUST
A little boy came home from Sunday School and went into his room to change clothes. When he emerged, he asked his mother, “Is it true that we came from dust?” His mother replied, “Yes, dear. God made us from dust.” The kid ran back into his room and came out all excited. “Mom, I just looked under my bed, and there’s somebody either coming or going!”

God remembers that we are but dust…

Illustration
A visiting pastor waxed eloquent during the offertory prayer. “Dear Lord”, he began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. “Without you, we are but dust...” He would have continued but at that moment, a very obedient little child (who was listening!) leaned over to mom and asked quite audibly in a shrill little voice, “Mom, what is butt dust?”

Lesson

He knows your limits

He knows what we’re made of.
You may be surprised to find out that you’re flawed, but God isn’t.
You may be surprised to find out that you can’t get all the things accomplished that you want to accomplish, but God isn’t.
You may be surprised that you could do such a stupid thing like you just did, but God isn’t.  He knows what you’re made of.
Some of us expect more of ourselves and of others than God does of us.  He understands.

:15 As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.

:16 For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, And its place remembers it no more.

:17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting On those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children’s children,

:18 To such as keep His covenant, And to those who remember His commandments to do them.

While our physical lives only last a few years, God’s mercy goes on and on.

:19 The Lord has established His throne in heaven, And His kingdom rules over all.

:20 Bless the Lord, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word.

:21 Bless the Lord, all you His hosts, You ministers of His, who do His pleasure.

:21 His hosts

His angels.  His army.

:22 Bless the Lord, all His works, In all places of His dominion. Bless the Lord, O my soul!

:22 Bless the Lord, O my soul!

David has commanded the angels, the “hosts”, all of creation to “bless” God.

If they can all bless God, then we can command our own “souls” to bless Him.

10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)/ Words and Music by Matt Redman / ©2011 ThankYou Music / 10,0000 Reasons.doc

Psalm 104 – Bless the Creator

:1 Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, You are very great: You are clothed with honor and majesty,

:1 Bless the Lord, O my soul!

Again, the psalmist is commanding his own soul to give God praise.

This time, the focus is going to be on God as our Creator.

We praise Him because He’s the Creator of the heavens and the earth.

:2 Who cover Yourself with light as with a garment, Who stretch out the heavens like a curtain.

:2 Who cover Yourself with light

We sing a song with the lyric, “He wraps Himself with light…”

God is all about light.

(1 John 1:5 NKJV) This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
(1 Timothy 6:16 NKJV) who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

:3 He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters, Who makes the clouds His chariot, Who walks on the wings of the wind,

(Psalm 104:3 NLT) you lay out the rafters of your home in the rain clouds. You make the clouds your chariot; you ride upon the wings of the wind.

:4 Who makes His angels spirits, His ministers a flame of fire.

angelsmal’ak – messenger, representative; angel

spiritsruwach – wind, breath, mind, spirit

ministerssharath – (Piel) to minister, serve, minister to

:4 His ministers a flame of fire

Angels are often connected with fire.

When Samson’s parents were visited by the Angel of the Lord, they were told about the son that would be born to them, and they made a sacrifice to God…

(Judges 13:20 NLT) As the flames from the altar shot up toward the sky, the angel of the Lord ascended in the fire. When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell with their faces to the ground.

When Elijah was taken up in a whirlwind to heaven …

(2 Kings 2:11 NLT) As they were walking along and talking, suddenly a chariot of fire appeared, drawn by horses of fire. It drove between the two men, separating them, and Elijah was carried by a whirlwind into heaven.

When Elisha was surrounded by Syrians, he wasn’t afraid like his servant was …

(2 Kings 6:17 NLT) Then Elisha prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes and let him see!” The Lord opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.

The angels are part of God’s creation.

The author of Hebrews quotes our passage
(Hebrews 1:14 NKJV) Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?

Angels are part of God’s creation, and their purpose is to “minister” to or serve believers.

:5 You who laid the foundations of the earth, So that it should not be moved forever,

:6 You covered it with the deep as with a garment; The waters stood above the mountains.

:6 The waters stood above the mountains

The writer is talking about the flood of Noah, when the water covered the mountains.

:7 At Your rebuke they fled; At the voice of Your thunder they hastened away.

:8 They went up over the mountains; They went down into the valleys, To the place which You founded for them.

:9 You have set a boundary that they may not pass over, That they may not return to cover the earth.

:9 they may not return to cover the earth

God created the rainbow as a sign that He would never again destroy the earth by a flood.

(Genesis 9:14–15 NKJV) —14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; 15 and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.

:10 He sends the springs into the valleys; They flow among the hills.

:10 He sends the springs into the valleys

Not only did God create everything, but He also maintains everything.

There are some who teach that God created everything, and then moved away somewhere and isn’t involved with His creation.  Not so.

The Psalmist is going to talk about how God cares for His creation.

:11 They give drink to every beast of the field; The wild donkeys quench their thirst.

:12 By them the birds of the heavens have their home; They sing among the branches.

:13 He waters the hills from His upper chambers;

(Psalm 104:13 NLT) You send rain on the mountains from your heavenly home…

The earth is satisfied with the fruit of Your works.

:14 He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, And vegetation for the service of man, That he may bring forth food from the earth,

:15 And wine that makes glad the heart of man, Oil to make his face shine, And bread which strengthens man’s heart.

:16 The trees of the Lord are full of sap, The cedars of Lebanon which He planted,

:17 Where the birds make their nests; The stork has her home in the fir trees.

:18 The high hills are for the wild goats; The cliffs are a refuge for the rock badgers.

:18 wild goats … rock badgers

At Ein Gedi (“spring of the young goats”) in Israel, you can see both rock badgers as well as wild goats …

:19 He appointed the moon for seasons; The sun knows its going down.

:19 the moon for seasons

(Genesis 1:14 NKJV) Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years;

:20 You make darkness, and it is night, In which all the beasts of the forest creep about.

:21 The young lions roar after their prey, And seek their food from God.

:22 When the sun rises, they gather together And lie down in their dens.

:23 Man goes out to his work And to his labor until the evening.

:24 O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions—

:24 In wisdom You have made them all

There is intelligence in the design of creation.

In contrast, Charles Darwin suggested that all life came about through the process of natural selection and chance random mutation.

No design whatsoever.
Darwin’s theory leaves no room for an intelligent Creator putting thought and purpose into the world around us.

When you look at the information that is encoded in the DNA of a simple cell, it’s hard to believe that someone can think there was no “coder” programming the living cell.

Getting down to the cellular level, we find that there is quite a bit a lot of complicated things happening, things show intelligent design.

Lesson

Intelligent Creator

That’s the whole point of this psalm.
There is a real God who has made everything.  He acts with wisdom, with intelligence.
He’s made a beautiful world and deserves our thanks and praise.
Video:  God’s Beautiful Creation

In contrast to this, the Bible says that God is the Creator.

Animals and people aren’t some sort of cosmic mutational mistake, they show actual intelligence in their design.
With today’s technology, the greater the microscopes, the more detailed investigation we can conduct.
What you see is not the product of chance random mutation, but very intricate, intelligent design, such as the investigation in how to build a simple worm…

:25 This great and wide sea, In which are innumerable teeming things, Living things both small and great.

:26 There the ships sail about; There is that Leviathan Which You have made to play there.

:26 There is that Leviathan

Leviathanlivyathan – leviathan, sea monster, dragon

Giant squid can grow to be bigger than a school bus.

Could there have been real sea monsters?  Who knows? I have actual footage…

:27 These all wait for You, That You may give them their food in due season.

:28 What You give them they gather in; You open Your hand, they are filled with good.

:29 You hide Your face, they are troubled; You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.

:30 You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; And You renew the face of the earth.

:31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever; May the Lord rejoice in His works.

:32 He looks on the earth, and it trembles; He touches the hills, and they smoke.

:33 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.

:34 May my meditation be sweet to Him; I will be glad in the Lord.

:35 May sinners be consumed from the earth, And the wicked be no more. Bless the Lord, O my soul! Praise the Lord!

:35 May sinners be consumed from the earth

Sinners are out of harmony with the Creator.
